18-24 November 2022 we celebrate the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2022 (who.int) World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) is a global campaign that is celebrated annually to improve awareness and understanding of Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) and encourage best practices among the public, stakeholders and policymakers. AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death. As a result of drug resistance, antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines become ineffective and infections become increasingly difficult or impossible to treat.

Impact of Covid-19 on UTI and antibiotic stewardship (T. Cai et al. on Uro 2022)

Several recent studies showed that, despite the overall percentage of bacterial co-infection among COVID-19 patients was low, the use of antibiotic was high. This motivated a team of urologists led by Prof. Tommaso Cai, from the Department of Urology, Santa Chiara Regional Hospital, to discuss the role of managing urinary tract infections during the COVID-19 pandemic.
